Rescue lesson: How to ‘read’ vehicles before cutting
Can you explain some of the problems with the Chevy Corvair you wrote about in the book? So those were the years where technological stagnation was the big problem and how to force-feed innovation through government regulations that actually worked. And so I wrote this book and General Motors put private detectives on me. The auto companies had this pejorative description of the driver as quote, “the nut behind the wheel” unquote.

When I started with the environmental effort, they said, you’re going to get lead out of gasoline? Certainly activists on climate change, or pro-Palestine activists who couldn’t even get Kamala Harris to meet with the families of Gaza https://sblouin.com/ victims, can feel really like it’s so hard to actually shift public policy. And they’re going after Obamacare, and Obama’s hardly speaking out. No one else has a sovereign power.

“I told Ralph I was sure GM expected to be sued and that they were probably prepared to pay a large sum, larger than any previous award, to bury their mistakes,” Speiser would later write in his own book, Lawsuit (1980), recounting their case against GM. In fact, not long after the GM-Nader showdown on Capitol Hill, an attorney friend of Nader’s, Stuart Speiser, called him on the phone. And in the next morning’s newspapers, the apology by GM was front-page news all across the country. ’ Then he grabbed the GM report, threw it down on the table and said, ‘And you didn’t find a damned thing’.”
They should have used the word contagious more, they should have used, you don’t want to have a vaccine but your children are being vaccinated when they’re a very young age from diphtheria and measles and you didn’t object to that. But not in New Hampshire, is the only state left in the country, Ira, that does not require use of the three-point seat belt, not just installation, that’s in all cars. And this is what we’ve got to get over, that it’s when government does nothing that so much bad happens not just when government does some things that are wrong. And we’re in just the reverse now, we’ve got all kinds of safety improvements on the shelf or only for high-priced cars as standard equipment, not for lower-priced cars but the Congress and the government are just not moving.

And one of the popular answers that is emerging among elite Democrats to this is found in the current number one best-selling non-fiction book by Ezra Klein of the New York Times and Derek Thompson of the Atlantic. They didn’t even have slogans, Nathan. Because they’re in the pockets of the corporations. We can document that better than anybody in the country, because Mark Green and I—and others—assembled 24 civic leaders in July 2022 on a Zoom call with any Democratic candidate running for Congress, and five or six showed up out of 200 and some. So tell us about that side of the story as we linger here on the failures before we get to the empowered citizen. The Senate delegation to the White House said, your time’s up, you’re done.
- What are we coming to when a great and powerful corporation will engage in such unethical and scandalous activity in an effort to discredit a citizen who is a witness before a Congressional committee.

- We need airbags that protect at higher collision speeds, we need better systems in cars.
Ribbicoff had noted that Unsafe at Any Speed was a “provocative book” that had “some very serious things to say about the design and manufacture of motor vehicles.” The book also raised public policy questions, and was being widely read in the auto industry. In early 1966, in his State of the Union address, President Lyndon B. Johnson called for the enactment of a National Highway Safety Act. In the New York Times article on the book’s release, which ran in the back pages of the paper, Nader criticized the auto industry, tire manufacturers, the National Safety Council and the American Automobile Association for ignoring auto safety problems. By May of 1965, Nader left the Department of Labor to work full time on the book that would become Unsafe at Any Speed. He had also become quite excited on discovering the arguments put forward in a 1956 Harvard Law Review article written by Harold Katz that suggested automobile manufacturers could be liable for unsafe auto design.
These are the strongest points of connection between the inner door construction and the vertical posts or pillars of the vehicle. It is easy to develop tunnel vision toward the latch assemblies and hinges and attempt to gain access to these by spreading the door at their locations. Using vertical spreads in the window opening to create purchase points for hinge or latch access make the most sense. Peeling body panels exposes inner construction but does not increase access to our objective. The advantage here is the size of the egress hole from which the patient can be removed and the time saved by not having to make A, B and C pillar cuts. Kipper-can technique The kipper-can technique received its name from extrication challenges during the hand-tool scenarios because they’re similar to opening a sardine can.
Whether they’re conservatives or liberals, they want a living wage and an adequate retirement package. Well, it turns out, Nathan, that there is a lot of left-right agreement in this country. So, this book has all kinds of examples of people who start out in the day as a consumer or worker or voter or taxpayer or parent, and they say, there’s something I don’t like here. They’re using their experience to create a civic dimension to what they’ve gone through, and they have moral authority, and they’re doing it. And as we talk, they’re in their third week of hunger fast in communion with the starving people in Gaza under the heel of the fascist terrorist Netanyahu.

If there’s one perfect example of “big government” intervening in an imperfect marketplace to save lives, this is probably it. He organized locally, pressured Washington from outside Washington, won an important statewide insurance initiative in California, wrote more books, and began putting the pieces in place for an American Museum of Tort Law in Winsted see “Ralph Nader, the Nation’s Curator,” at TheNation.com. Eventually going through four different editions and print runs of more than one million copies, it remains the best-selling book ever written on Congress…. Then Oscar Dystel, head of Bantam Books, suggested that we publish a book based on all the research to “make Congress readable.” So Ralph conscripted journalist Jim Fallows, environmentalist David Zwick, and me to write it in just seven weeks. So in November 1971, he announced “probably the most comprehensive and detailed study of Congress since its establishment.” It was an audacious effort, with 1,000 volunteers and 50 full-time Raiders researching and writing profiles of 484 members of Congress, plus book-length reports on six major committees. Most fun was getting him on to host Saturday Night Live, where he powered through his “cold open” despite the air bag hidden in his shirt that failed to inflate as planned when he was hugged by a female cast member (you had to be there).
- There was no “theory of everything” that controlled our work in the 1960s and ’70s, no Little Red Book as our touchstone.
- And of course, it’s only gotten worse with social media companies now.
- Well, it doesn’t take much to beat back on that, because you’ve got red state parents and blue state parents who have lost control of their kids, and they know it, and they’re mad, and they know who’s doing it.

The assembly is best suited to be removed to the side that’s opposite of the victim location. The windshield must be cut from A-pillar to A-pillar and can be removed with the roof assembly (Photo 8). If not, continue to cut the pillars in sequence until all of them are cut on each side of the vehicle. Relief cuts in front of the next sequential pillars might allow displacement of the roof to facilitate victim removal.
In fact, in his statement Roche deplored “the kind of harassment to which Mr. Nader has apparently been subjected.” He added that he was “just as shocked and outraged” as the senators were. At the hearing, Roche explained to the committee that GM had started its investigation of Nader before his book came out, and before he was scheduled to appear in Congress. Holding the GM report on Nader, Senator Ribicoff at one point, upset with GM’s campaign to “smear a man,” reportedly said to GM witnesses, “…and you didn’t find a damn thing,” tossing the report on the table. The company’s legal department was at the center of this concern, though others in the company were also annoyed by Nader’s book https://losinterventores.com/ and his activities on Capitol Hill. At the time Nader wrote his book, more than 100 lawsuits had been filed against GM’s Chevrolet division for the Corvair’s alleged deficiencies.

The book was an immediate sensation, and in 1966 Nader appeared before Congress to testify about unsafe practices in the automobile industry. Often called “consumerism,” it combined private-sector investment and efficiency with government regulation and disclosure. But like the dots in a pointillist painting that together form a discernible image, a philosophy of government and business emerged out of our hundreds of books, columns, reports, testimonies, and speeches. Unsafe became a bestseller, and it’s now listed by the Library of Congress as one of the 88 “books that shaped America.”
Initially, Nader and his book were featured at one U.S. By the time Nader’s book was published, the Corvair had already gotten a redesigned suspension that mitigated the issues of the early cars; the model continued production until 1969. Inspired by the more than 100 lawsuits against General Motors regarding accidents in the Chevrolet Corvair, the book launched Nader into the spotlight. You then place your spreaders into the cut and attempt to lift, but the dash reaction is minimal and the A pillar that you are spreading starts to shear apart and displace in an undesirable way. You prepare to lift the dash by making one relief cut in the A pillar between the dash and the rocker. Once you have gained adequate access to the door’s inner construction around the latch assembly or hinges, spread it out and pop the connection or cut it.
Nader’s book, a broad investigation of auto safety failings generally, was critical of both the auto industry and the federal government. Having the time and resources available to apply these skills prior to the emergency will increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the company when it’s called to respond. Be sure to have wire cutters on hand to cut any wiring for power accessories that might be in the door assemblies. Normal access for passengers to pass between the B-pillar and the front seat when getting to the rear seat won’t work when removing an injured patient (Photo 1). When governments focus on designing regulations cooperatively with input from regulatory bodies, regulated industries, and the rest of society – rather than simply scrapping them – regulations can not only protect humans and the environment from the excesses of market-driven industries, but actually benefit those industries.

And it’s now, not some hyped science fiction futuristic dream about fully-autonomous vehicles, whose technical problems remain after years of false assurances and hopes of the auto companies and the high-tech companies.
Once you’re confident that one corner is completely severed, repeat on the opposite side. If the hood-release lever is not accessible or operational, a quick option for the air chisel is to sever the rear corners of the hood completely to allow it to open. The basics of air-chisel use Assuming size-up, safety checks, proper PPE and vehicle stabilization have been adhered to, start with gaining access under the hood for battery disconnection. A high level of knowledge and understanding regarding the capabilities and limitations of all of the equipment that’s in the tool cache is what leads to success at the incident (Photos 9 and 10).
Former vice president Walter Mondale has called him “a man without parallel in American history.” Liberal essayist Michael Kinsley argued that “no living American is responsible for more concrete improvements” in our society. ” Given the reluctance of hosts and bookers to reach out to him, Nader tries to reach out directly to citizens via social media, writing a column for The Huffington Post, tweeting daily, and hosting a weekly radio show and podcast. Nader now appears so rarely on national TV, including cable shows, that when he went on MSNBC’s Hardball recently, the irrepressibly exuberant host Chris Matthews (himself a former Nader’s Raider) couldn’t stop remarking, “Wow, Ralph Nader—it’s really you! He continues to bang out a column a week and spends more time in his Winsted family home writing books very different from those he supervised in earlier years, publishing five between 2011 and 2015.

It’s because a few people are pushing back from around the country, and they’re getting the ear of some of the legislators and some of the people in the regulatory agencies. That’s why we’re paying a little attention to ultra-processed foods, and it’s causing chronic illness and undermining the health of kids, in particular—junk food, junk drink. That’s why this book is so personal, not to me—it’s personal to the roles people play. The book inspired action in Congress – and quite vociferous objections from automakers – leading to the passage of numerous enhanced safety regulations as well as the creation of a new regulatory agency to enforce them. Mid-20th-century automobile advertisements promised horsepower, styling, and the allure of the open road. That inspired me to recently and mischievously ask a well-known author on a book tour his opinion of who, outside of electoral politics, has had a comparable impact on as many issues over time as Citizen Nader.

Congress is on a Tuesday to Thursday week when they’re in session. And now, all over the country, the trucks are backing up with bells, and you don’t see many fatalities from what was a very avoidable risk pattern. Well, when you see how many lives have been saved because of simple safety devices in motor vehicles, every day you’re reminded. You could have gone to corporate law like all your classmates, and you chose a life that was probably exhausting and frustrating in many ways, but I assume you come to a similar conclusion and feel satisfied at the end of the day. As you look back on your life, you gave up a lot. And I remember we did a book once on women activists, and the writer went all over interviewing these women—women in England against the nuclear arms race, women trying to stop a nuclear plant in Michigan, and so on.
As I say, you don’t dwell on all the crises and problems so much in this book. Why don’t you blame the local government and the various business interests who get locked in and demand this kind of response, or this kind of product, or this kind of material, or this kind of review? He mentions that if you want to get a building permit in New York, it’s like a nightmare, and there’s a lot to that, but to blame consumer advocates and environmental advocates? A lot of them are kind of latching onto this narrative that, in some ways, efforts to tame the government ended up making the government ineffective.
We want universal health care—every other country has it. That means you’ve got the power that you have delegated to the Senate representatives sitting right there in front of you—no flags, no intermediaries, no one in between—and you, the citizenry, run the town meeting. Warren Buffett once said, there’s only 535 people, we’re millions of people—how come we can’t control them? Our history is full of a tiny number of people, so what is the number that’s needed? So it’s a numbers game as well. But it’s all a matter of numbers.
The book had a massive effect on auto safety in the U.S., setting the groundwork for laws about seatbelts, and the creation of the United States Department of Transportation. The President of Venezuela has reportedly been stuck in a unit for high-profile inmates, known for housing rappers and tech moguls, while his country forms an uneasy relationship with Trump. High-speed accidents, crooked lawyers, and poor people desperate for cash—it was the kind of scheme that could have been cooked up only in the Big Easy. “The lawyers didn’t tell people that McDonald’s kept their coffee that hot for commercial advantage. But during the opening, a group of E.M.T.s walked across the street with a copy of their training textbook for Mr. Nader to sign.
The first step an EMT should take is to evaluate all possible access points before employing more forceful methods. If all doors are inaccessible, more forceful methods may then be considered depending on the patient’s condition. It is essential to note that the other options, such as using a pry-bar or breaking windows, should only be considered if all doors are inoperable and there is an immediate need to reach the patient due to a life-threatening condition. The final answer, therefore, in a two-line explanation in 300 words would be to choose the option that provides the safest and quickest access to the patient while minimizing risks and potential harm.
Once the vehicle is stabilized, cut the pillars of the vehicle, starting at the rear pillars. It might be necessary to remove the entire roof assembly from underneath the vehicle to access and remove the patient safely. Make two parallel cuts into the A-pillar, one directly above the lower hinge and one directly below the lower hinge. Furthermore, when the vehicle is up against a stationary object, it’s exceedingly difficult to displace the dashboard and firewall assembly off of the occupants. Additionally, when the vehicles come to rest, the front of the passenger compartment might be pushed down on the occupants, which hinders access. Moreover, recently, high-speed frontal collisions have resulted in more footwell entanglements, including pedal entanglement and lower firewall intrusion with the patient’s lower extremities.
